However, the visitor&#8217;s center is still open, and the road through Taroko is still open three times a day if you have your own vehicle. Five people died directly from rockfalls. It was the strongest earthquake since 1999. Taroko Gorge experienced major landslides and rockfalls, blocking the roads and trails, and causing damage everywhere. Over six hundred people were stranded inside Taroko Park for several days before the road could be cleared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-boldblocks-youtube-block\"><div id=\"yb-video-TDP5Jc9-QY8\" class=\"yb-player\" data-video-id=\"TDP5Jc9-QY8\" data-title=\"Play\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/TDP5Jc9-QY8\/hqdefault.jpg)\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"yb-btn-play\"><span class=\"visually-hidden\">Play<\/span><\/button><\/div><figcaption class=\"yb-caption\">Dash footage of a car in Taroko Gorge during the earthquake. The driver is okay. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typhoon Gaemi (2024) and Typhoon Kong-Rey (2024)<\/h2>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26 mark, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26\"] mark{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}<\/style>\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading5693_5945d3-26\">Typhoons <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/remembering-typhoon-gaemi-2024-my-taiwan-typhoon-experience\/?_thumbnail_id=2192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Gaemi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/remebering-typhoon-kong-rey-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kong-Rey<\/a> were both category 4 Typhoons that hit the east coast near Hualien in 2024, also bringing torrential rains that washed away debris but also creating more landslides in the area. During Typhoon Kong-Rey, Hualien received over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rti.org.tw\/news\/view\/id\/2226258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1200mm<\/a>&nbsp;(4 feet) of rain in one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Situation in Taroko Gorge and Taroko National Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/DJI_20241116165214_0080_D-2048x1152.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5684\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo of the road around Swallow Grotto which is off-limits and covered in rubble. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taroko Gorge 2025 Update: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The road through Taroko Gorge up to Hehuanshan is open if you have your own vehicle, but only three times a day: 8 AM, 12 Noon, and 4 PM. You need to leave the park by 5:30 PM. There are many parts of the road that are just dirt or covered in potholes. Currently, only the Taroko National Park visitor&#8217;s center is open. But there are a few spots along the side of the road in Taroko Gorge where you can take photos. Again, all trails and everything else except the visitor center are closed. Originally we planned on stopping at the Qingshui Cliffs on the way down from Yilan, but the whole parking lot is closed off due to a recent landslide. There is nowhere to park along the side of the road. Also, the whole area is covered in excavators and heavy equipment. Therefore, Qingshui Cliffs is effectively closed for now (both north and south parking areas). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-2-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5694\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the drive down, I did notice a lot of the mountain faces were bare like this one. Due to the recent earthquake and subsequent Typhoons, many mountains have turned color from green to grey from so many landslides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-4-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5695\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This was our first view as we crossed the Liwu River. The sign said:<br><strong>Warning<\/strong><br>The section between the Taroko Arch Gate and Tianxiang in Taroko National Park has been severely damaged by recent earthquakes and typhoons.<br>At present, the trails and scenic spots are currently closed. The risk of rockfalls, mudslides, and along Provincial Highway 8 remains high. If entry is necessary, please carefully assess the risks and ensure your safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taroko National Park Visitor&#8217;s Center \u592a\u9b6f\u95a3\u6e38\u5ba2\u4e2d\u5fc3<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-5-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5696\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we visited, the road to Taroko Gorge was still closed. The only place that was open was the visitor&#8217;s center here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-6-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5697\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In front of the visitor&#8217;s center is a sign with other fun places to visit around Taroko Gorge. I had never been inside before because usually I just drive straight into Taroko Gorge. If entry is necessary, please carefully assess the risks and ensure your safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-30-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5700\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the bridge, you can see the Shakadang trail is covered in a landslide just past the first rock enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-34-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5701\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, you can see one lion got its head chopped off and the fence here was damaged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-45-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5702\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving further down the road, we noticed lots of small landslides like this and lots of potholes in the road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-53-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5703\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also lots of sections of white cliffs here from recent rockfalls. As you can see from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignersintaiwan.com\/blog\/our-guide-to-taroko-national-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">our blogs on previous trips<\/a>, the walls of the gorge used to be a darker gray color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-60-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5704\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Parts of the road are dirt and only one lane of traffic can pass at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Buluowan Recreation Area \u5e03\u6d1b\u7063\u904a\u60a0\u5340<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-71-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5705\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the road up to Buluowan. It is almost unrecognizable. A landslide completely covered the road. I did not attempt to drive up this makeshift dirt road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-72-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5706\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another view of the rockslides near Buluowan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shanyue Suspension Bridge (\u5c71\u6708\u540a\u6a4b)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-75-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5707\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From our car, we could see that Shanyue Suspension Bridge (\u5c71\u6708\u540a\u6a4b) was still standing, but the bridge is off-limits due to damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignersintaiwan.com\/blog-370963385326684\/zhuilu-old-trail\">Zhuilu Old Trail \u9310\u9e93\u53e4\u9053<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-125-1365x2048.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5715\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Zhuilu Old Trail is closed indefinitely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-123-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5716\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you can see that during a recent typhoon, the water level reached up tot he road here and deposited some debris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/DJI_20241116165550_0087_D-2048x1152.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5721\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see from my drone shot above, the suspension bridge along the Zhuilu trail here was broken. It may take many years to repair it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Swallow Grotto \u71d5\u5b50\u53e3<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/DJI_20241116164953_0071_D-2048x1152.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5717\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Swallow Grotto is partially accessible on foot but is officially closed. The wooden platform here was badly damaged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-116-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5712\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The old bridge here got torn in half. The last time I visited in 2023, the whole bridge was still intact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.rersczyr.a2hosted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/tarokogorgeeqfl-111-2048x1365.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5714\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not far from the lookout, there is a giant landslide, making the whole path a dirt road. Recently it also got washed by floodwaters.
