Chinese settlers from Fujian began living here during the Dutch rule in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/zh.wikipedia.org\/zh-tw\/%E5%A4%A7%E7%A8%BB%E5%9F%95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1600s.<\/a><br>The first Chinese settlers came to the area in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/zh.wikipedia.org\/zh-tw\/%E5%A4%A7%E7%A8%BB%E5%9F%95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mid-1800&#8217;s<\/a>&nbsp;during the Qing Dynasty. They created a public area for drying rice and grain, called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignersintaiwan.com\/blog-370963385326684\/dihua-street-and-dadaocheng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dadaocheng (\u5927\u7a3b\u57d5)<\/a>&nbsp;which also became the central market in the area.<br>The earliest trading shops were built in 1851, mainly selling rice, sugar, camphor, and tea.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignersintaiwan.com\/blog-370963385326684\/dihua-street-and-dadaocheng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dihua Street (\u8fea\u5316\u8857)<\/a>&nbsp;was created around this time, making it the oldest street in Taipei. Most of the buildings were one story and made of red brick in Fujian style, and later western style houses were built.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignersintaiwan.com\/blog-370963385326684\/old-city-gates-of-taipei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walls and gates of Taipei<\/a>&nbsp;were completed in 1884 but demolished in 1904 during Japanese rule when Taipei became Taiwan\u2019s capital.
